I have this neighbor named Steve.  His wife had been traveling out of town. To Puerto Rico in fact.  Five days a week.

She comes home from the airport Friday night and tells Steve she’ll be going back on Sunday morning instead of Monday as planned.  With the children upstairs, they get into a horrible fight.  It must have been bad because Steve killed her.  Strangulation.

Not knowing what to do, Steve takes his wife’s dead body to the family’s tool and die shop dismembering it.  Steve takes biggest part, the torso, and puts it in the garage at his house.  He takes the head, arms, legs, and feet, and scatters them around the local park. 

Five days later he calls the police to report her missing.

They investigate the case for 3 weeks.

Finally they decide to get a search warrant and search Steve’s home.  Steve tells authorities he’s taking the dog for a walk down the street.  He’ll be right back.

Steve goes to my neighbor’s house and asks to borrow his truck.  He takes the truck and leaves town.  Heading up to northern Michigan.

The police find the torso in garage.

They launch a search operation at the local park.  Armed with helicopters, dogs, and over 100 men they start uncovering the rest of the body parts.

Steve calls his sister from a very remote state park 250 miles away.  The FBI traces the cell phone call.  They start a manhunt in the massive forest.

They find Steve 12 hours later.  He’s in slacks and a shirt walking deep in the woods.  It’s 14-degrees outside.  He’s airlifted with a coast guard helicopter to a local hospital.  Steve’s treated for frostbite.

The next day he “confesses” to murdering his wife and dismembering her.  The family’s horrified.  Lawyers say he can’t get a fair trial now.  Maybe he’ll walk.

No you can’t make stories like this up.  But you can live down the road from people this crazy.
